Round Seat Cushions
How To Repair Round Seat Cushions
It's not uncommon for round seat cushions to become damaged over time through general wear and tear. Most of the damage will be in the form of a stain that can occur from harsh weather such as rain and mildew or from food and drink accidentally spilling on the round seat cushion. In either case, you'll want to repair the damaged cushion to keep your furniture in top shape. Here are a few helpful tips to fixing your seat cushions.
Fixing Round Seat Cushions
It is easy to make new covers for round seat cushions by using upholstery, home decorating fabric, or a nice strong but simple fabric such as denim or basic cotton. To get the correct size for your round cushion covers, measure the cushion's diameter or you can place the cushion on a large piece of paper and trace around it to make your pattern. This patterning technique is best for round seat cushions that have foam or fiber-fill that is no more than two inches thick, such as stool or dining room chair cushions.
Place your seat cushion on a large, flat piece of paper. Draw a circle that is at least one inch wider than the cushion all the way around so that the fabric pillow case will be large enough to cover the cushion and allow for a 1/4 inch seam. Cut out your paper circle to use as a pattern.
Make a second paper circle of the same size, tracing the first one. Cut out this circle, then cut this pattern piece in half.
Measure two strips of paper against the length of the straight edge of the half circle, then cut each strip 2 1/2 inches wide so that you have two edges to your half circles. Tape the 2 1/2 inch strips to the straight edge of each of the half circle pattern pieces, overlapping the strip to the edge by 1/4 inch.
Pin your whole circle pattern and your two adjusted half circle patterns to the fabric of your choice. Cut out one whole circle and two half circles from your fabric.
Hem the straight edges of each fabric half circle with a 1/2 inch double fold. Fold the straight edge over itself by 1/2 inch, then fold it over again, this should make a 1/2 inch hem. Press the folds flat and top stitch across the inside hem of the straight edge of the half circle. Repeat with other half circle.
Place the whole circle and the hemmed half circles with their right sides together, lining up the outer edges. The straight, hemmed edges of the half circles should overlap. Pin the edges of the circles together.
Using a 1/4 inch seam allowance, stitch the edges of the round cushion cover together.
Turn your round cushion cover right side out, press the edges, then insert the cushion through the opening you've created in the bottom. You can leave the cushion cover open if you want the option of being able to remove the cushion so you can wash or change the covers, or you can hand stitch the straight edges closed.
If you're not up for the job of creating new round seat cushions, consider just purchasing brand new ones all together.
