Retro Egg Chair
Arne Jacobsen's Creation Of The Retro Egg Chair
In 1958, Arne Jacobsen created the retro egg chair. It was invented for the SAS Royal Hotel also the largest hotel in Copenhagen, Denmark at the time. The SAS Royal Hotel was owned by the airline of the same name and became Denmark's first skyscraper.
The building itself is an expression of modernistic style that became known as the 'glass cigar box' upon its debut. The steel structure remains a monument to the Modernist movement to this day. The twentieth-century style reputation of the glass cigar box was not based solely on the building's design but also on its contents. Jacobson's philosophy has been described as "from spoon to city." The egg chair, the Swan chair, and encompassing everything else from door handles, cutlery, and martini mixers were designed as a singular unit. Each piece of the unit was considered an integral element of the harmonious design.
How Much For A Retro Egg Chair
Original retro egg chairs, manufactured by the Danish company Fritz Hansen, sell by the thousands in the $5,000+ range. The high cost of an original Arne Jacobsen egg chair has created a demand for cheaper reproductions. These reproductions are increasing in popularity and are being marketed between $600 to $2,000 a chair. Some authentic examples from the 1950s have sold at New York auction houses for up to $70,000. The egg's unique shape guarantees a bit of privacy in otherwise public spaces, and with or without its ottoman, is ideal for lounge and waiting areas as well.
Arne Jacobsen A Work of Art
Arne was very productive as both an architect and a designer. His association with Fritz Hansen dates back to 1934. In 1952 the production of the Ant and Series 7 chairs propelled the names of Jacobson and Hansen into furniture history.
At the end of the 50s Arne Jacobsen designed the Royal Copenhagen Hotel, which introduced the swan and egg, the swan sofa, and the Series 3300 to the design world. He was an outstanding designer who remains admired to this day. His furniture and other design work have become a national heritage to Denmark and gained favorable international notice. Arne Jacobsen egg chairs will forever display his art and design forever.
