Egg Chairs by Arne Jacobsen
The Sleek Design Of Arne Jacobsen Egg Chairs
In 1958, Arne Jacobsen designed egg chairs for the Radisson hotel in Denmark. The chair used revolutionary materials that were far ahead of their time. Keeping true to it's name, these chairs are oval in shape and offer a surprising amount of privacy. They are currently made by the Republic of Fritz Hansen.
Egg chairs today are designed with a synthetic shell, covered with padding and fabric, seated on top of an x-shaped aluminum base. The egg shell is made of a fiberglass reinforcement and covered with a polyurethane foam padding. You can select from a variety of fabrics or leather upholstery depending on your liking. The shell can also be adjusted forwards or backwards to make lounging extra comfortable. The price might be a little shocking, but remember you are paying for a piece of art work - classic, chic, and extremely high quality.
The Real Deal
While Arne Jacobsen egg chairs may initially seem tremendously costly, keep in mind that they offer a high level of quality, collector's value, and financial return to the design originator. As of 2006, all productions are required to have a Republic of Fritz Hansen signage or labeling so you will know it's an original. The label indicates the manufacturing year of the particular piece.
If you are going to purchase an original Jacobsen chair, be sure to research the company from which you are buying the chair. You will want a reliable store that you can view the chair in person prior to purchase and a point of contact in case any problems or issues should they arise. Remember these chairs are peices of art work and you'll want to purchase from a reliable source, espeically if you're going to be spending thousands of dollars.
Pre-Owned Chairs
You can buy a preowned egg chairs through various online auctions such as amazon or eBay. However, you'll want to proceed with cautions as there are several knock offs on the market as well.
If you're not shopping for an original, then try to find a close replica to the original as possible in order to maintain the integrity of the original design. Owning a reproduction or copycat piece can be a way to endorse the brand or the concept of the real thing until you are able to afford to buy a true example.
As to be expected, there have been several modified versions of the original design released in 1958. Just look at the hanging egg chair for example. With that in mind, if you want an original, we recommend conducting extensive research before purchasing. Whether you get an original or a knock off, these retro egg chairs are beautifully designed to fit any living area.
