Arne Jacobsen's Background
Arne Jacobsen was born in 1902 in Copenhagen, Denmark. While in art school, he received a silver medal in chair design at the famous Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs held in Paris in 1925. It was during his time at the Exposition that he saw the works of Le Corbusier for the first time.
In 1928, he graduated from the Academy of Arts in Copenhagen and received his degree. However, during World War II, Jacobsen was forced into exile in Sweden for two years.
In 1956, Arne Jacobsen received the job of a lifetime to design the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen as well as the Aj Cutlery. This is when the famous Jacobsen egg chair and swan chair were born.
His career continued with his Series 7 chair which is notorious as the chair used in the nude photograph of Christine Keeler that led to the infamous Profumo Affair.
In 1971, Jacobsen passed away in his home city of Copenhagen, but left a legacy of design for all to see.
