Egg Chairs by Arne Jacobsen

Outdoor Egg Chairs Based on the Arne Jacobsen Design

Futuristic design and superior quality are what defines Arne Jacobsen egg chairs. In 1968, the first outdoor egg shell was designed and proved to be a hit. It is a truly versatile chair that is not only comfortable, but completely stylish in an indoor or outdoor setting.

There are several different versions of outdoor egg chairs on the market. Some chairs are hanging, some are wicker, some have a swivel design and so on. We are going to focus on the unique design of the collapsible and waterproof egg chair. The chair can transform from a pod to a chair in a matter of seconds by opening and closing the chair backing. When the chair back is closed, the egg chair is completely water proof and can withstand harsh weather year round. If you open the back you can enjoy a soft and incredibly comfortable chair and cushion. There are many designs of the egg chair offered with a wide range of colors and patterns available for both the exterior shell and the interior cushion. Now you can have a great egg chair that adds a unique look to your garden and can be used outside all year long no matter what the weather may be.

A Brief History of the Garden Egg Chair

The egg chair was first designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 and today is considered a classic by many furniture collectors. Over the years it has been given many names like the pod chair, the senftenberger ei, l'oeuf, and the egg chair.

In 1968, the Jacobsen egg design was changed slightly by Peter Ghyczy, who was head of the design department at Elastogran/Reuter at the time and the garden egg chair was born. The design came about because Elastogran/Reuter had entered into the polyurethane market and was starting to sell the plastic on a global scale. Elastogran/Reuter wanted to have a design center where potential clients would be able to see the remarkable qualities of polyurethane for themselves. From that desire came the first chair made entirely of polyurethane, the garden egg chair.

Though it has been many years since the first Arne egg chairs were produced, the chair remains very popular due to the adaptation in materials and designs over time to suit changing needs and technologies.

For a short while, the garden egg chair was produced by the East German firm VEB-Synthese-Werk, but in 1998, it returned to its true home at the Ghyczy Selection BV in the Netherlands. You can find your own unique bit of garden comfort under the brand name garden egg chair.

The Garden Egg Chair Architect

Born in 1940 in Hungary, Peter Ghyczy left his homeland in 1956 during the revolution for the calmer life of West Germany. He was able to complete his secondary education, then studied sculpture at the Düsseldorf Art Academy before moving on to architecture at Aachen University. He was then hired as the head of Elastogran/Reuter's design department, and in 1968 he created one of his most recognized designs, the garden egg chair. By 1972, Peter Ghyczy was feeling constrained by corporate design work and he retired from Elastogran/Reuter.

He then moved to the Netherlands and founded his own design firm, Ghyczy Selection BV, which has been the home of the garden egg chair since its return in 1998.

Peter Ghyczy's signature concept has always been his ability to make seemingly disparate elements blend together to form a sophisticated yet smooth whole that is truly unique. His work embodies many of the elements of classical Modernism, yet it also draws on the powerful lines of Art Deco design as well as his own playful and flowing sense of style.

Tip of the day:

When picking the perfect accent chair, pay attention to the chair height. You want it to be around the same height as your other chairs so that guests don't move their heads up and down frequently.
